The Great Divide

About two years ago, when my daughter was four and my niece was eight, they sat at our dining table with their ipod shuffles plugged into both sides of the laptop as they they traded songs. My niece, Mele, played songs off of Katelyn's ipod, and every time she started a new song, this exchange took place:

Katelyn: I like this song! Can I have it?
Mele: This is your ipod, Katelyn.

I don't own an ipod. I'm holding out for an ipad. That's my excuse, at least.

Some time ago, my sister's laptop was on our dining table when I came downstairs one evening. It was open, but the screen was blank. It appeard to be off, so I closed it. My mother saw me and said, "Ai! Your sister is unloading! Maybe you ruined it. She was unloading."

I wonder what she was unloading. Her burdens? Hopes and dreams? Ancient artifacts?

My mother knows how to check her bank account online. And by that, I mean she knows how to look at the screen and reconcile the transactions to her checkbook after I've pulled up her bank's website and logged her into her account.

Anytime she wants to take a look at her account activity, she asks me to "access it out".

I picked up my nephew the other day and I put him in charge of shuffling through the songs on my Zune during our ride home.

Rage Against the Machine came on after a Ben Harper song that I specifically requested he not skip over. As my head nodded and dipped to the bass line of Killing in the Name Of, he picked up the Zune and start looking through the titles. I asked him if he was familiar with any Rage songs. He wasn't. I hoped he would just place the Zune back down in the center console and allow himself to enjoy the unfamiliar. He did place the Zune down. And then? Nickleback.

Oh my gosh! Why do I even have Nickleback?

My son had a dream last night that the baby was born and it was a girl. I wonder how many more major changes will take place in the world by the time this baby turns five.

Baby will be seven years younger than Katelyn - the same age difference as me and my sister. Baby will also be five years younger than Jacob - the same age difference as James and his next oldest brother. Boy or girl? Whatever the Lord wants. I tell you what, though, my instinct is saying girl. We'll see.

This is me at 19 weeks (please excuse the shadows under my eyes; I wasn't tired, I had just washed my face and my mascara and eyeliner smudged):

Me at 19 weeks with Baby #3

4 words of wisdom:

  1. Is this your audition for teen mom3? You look so young! And I still love you even though you have nickelback, but I will choose the music.

  2. It's all about angles baby. Seriously, I don't know how Nickleback got on there.

  3. I love it that you wonder what will change in the next five years. So much can happen in that time span.

  4. Hi Heather. It amazes me how quickly technology advances and how drastically the world's economies shift in such life altering ways. So much will be the same, yet so much will be different five years from now.

Spit it out, yo!
