The Truth

My daughter knows the truth about Christmas. And the truth about Santa Claus and the tooth fairy. My son knows the truth about Christmas. But he is still waiting for Santa to stop in on Christmas eve.

We try to emphasize that Christmas is first about the birth of Christ. We talk about how the presents are a way for us to remember the gift of salvation that Jesus Christ gave us by giving himself for us, and how the presents help us to be more giving as we select and make gifts for others, and they are also a way to celebrate Christ's birth, but instead of handing gifts over to Jesus, we give them to each other. We try. But I think we still have a ways to go.

We are American and, let's face it, a HUGE part of Christmas in America (and it's territories and protectorates) is gifts. And every holiday season, my children are inundated with advertisements for this that and the other gift.

My son said to me the other day, "there's a buy one get one free sale at Macy's hardware."

There is no Macy's on Saipan.

I think we need to put the kibosh on the TV.

Merry Christmas, my friends.
